A New Approach to Cold Storage and Disaster Recovery

Disaster Recovery (DR) has traditionally been one of the first entrees to the public cloud for IT organizations. Rather than needing a second data center to act as the failover site, the public cloud is an ideal target — eliminating the need to acquire hardware and software to be used to house the data and then come online only for testing or in the case of a disaster. The public cloud saves money in terms of equipment, space, power, cooling and management to run the infrastructure which will get used sparingly.

Sureline is pleased to support Google Cloud Platform’s latest storage class, Coldline, with SUREedge DR. With Coldline joining the Google Cloud Storage lineup, organizations can choose the best storage class for their DR images based on access needs.

The new Coldline storage class is well suited for images that rarely if ever will need to be brought online. Rather than taking up more expensive storage, these images may sit for months or years with no access. They may be images of machines that are kept in case of audits, compliance requirements, or long term research. With Coldline, these images can be up and running quickly when they are needed. Having the same latency as the other Google Cloud Storage classes is a big advantage when you need to have access to these systems.

SUREedge DR is a business continuity and disaster recovery solution that provides the ability to plan, test, and run the recovery physical or virtual systems. SUREedge DR provides the orchestration and automation of a disaster recovery plan for systems according to predefined protection groups and dependencies. Replication of data between the data center and cloud is performed between instances of SUREedge DR, a pair of VMs running at each site.
